Full Form of DHCP

The full form of DHCP is the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol Institute. Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a networking protocol server that automatically provides and assigns IP addresses, default gateways, and other network parameters to client devices. It relies on a standard protocol known as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol or DHCP to answer client broadcast queries.

Advantage and disadvantage

  • Simple operation and configuration as network parameters only need to be entered once
  • In addition, existing IP addresses can be used optimally.
  • Due to the frequently changing locations, it is almost impossible for mobile devices to constantly reconfigure. In this case, the automatic DHCP system offers the advantage of being uncomplicated and simple to use.

  • The problem with DHCP is that clients accept any server. Therefore, when another server is nearby, the client may connect to that server, and that server may possibly send invalid data to the client.
  • The security of the MAC address is also not ensured.

History of DHCP

DHCP was first used in 1993. It was built on the 1985 Bootstrap Protocol (BOOTP). The definition of Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol is in RFC 2131 and can be found under UDP port numbers 67 and 68.
